Abstract: Despite the importance of public hospitals in providing medical and health services to the citizens, the recent prolonged industrial action by the Joint Health Sector Unions has significantly undermined hospital performance across Nigeria, with severe implications for service delivery and healthcare outcomes. Primarily, the industrial action, driven by unresolved demands to adjust the Consolidated Health Salary Structure for allied health professionals and other welfare issues, has crippled essential functions in public hospitals. Therefore, it is imperative to tackle this problem. This study examines, both theoretically and empirically, the relationship among employee compensation, employee recognition, and the Performance of the Public Hospital in Maiduguri Metropolis. The study adopted a quantitative research design, utilising a structured questionnaire on a 5-point Likert scale to collect data from healthcare workers across selected public hospitals. A stratified random sampling technique was employed to select representatives from different professional groups in the study. Data were analysed using SPSS 25. The regression results indicated that improvements in compensation and recognition lead to enhanced public hospital performance. The results highlighted the vital role of compensation and recognition in enhancing healthcare delivery. Therefore, the study recommends that government authorities and hospital management prioritise improving HR by investing in compensation and recognition practices. Additionally, policies aimed at enhancing staff welfare and motivation should be strengthened. |
